People across India seem to be in a celebratory mood following the decision by a Delhi court to hang the four convicts in the sensational?Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case. It¡¯s being suggested that justice has finally been served to ¡°India¡¯s Daughter¡± and though the decision came after a staggering seven years, it will help secure the safety of women and prevent rape cases in the future.
But we seem to be further from the truth as the very first few days into the new year of 2020 has seen a slew of rape cases as crimes against women continue unabated.?
Here are nine gruesome rape cases that have been reported in a matter of nine days:?
1. Woman kidnapped from Patna mall, raped at gunpoint
A woman was allegedly raped at gunpoint after being kidnapped from the parking lot of a mall in Patna. One person has been arrested out of four persons named in the FIR.
"We have identified the four accused persons who were the (rape) victim's acquaintances. One man raped the girl while others were part of the conspiracy," City Superintendent of Police (Central), Patna, Vinay Tiwary was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Asked whether it is a case of gangrape, Tiwary said, "No, it is not gangrape. It is rape but others were part of the conspiracy." Raids are being conducted to nab other culprits, the City SP said.
2. Two arrested for a gang-raping 19-year-old student in Bhopal
Two men were arrested for allegedly gang-raping a 19-year-old student in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.?
"The accused spotted the girl, a Class XII student, with a man at an isolated spot. They forcibly took the couple to an abandoned house near and shot obscene photographs of the girl. The two accused then raped the girl after threatening to circulate the pictures," said Inspector Ashok Singh Parihar of Govindpura police station said.
After the girl and her male friend approached police on Saturday, the accused, identified as Ram Babu (35) and Rajkumar (45) were arrested a few hours later, and charged under section 376D (gang-rape) of the IPC, Parihar said.
3. Man 'sexually assaults' 5-yr-old girl in Hyderabad
A 5-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a construction worker in Nacharam area, police said. The accused, who is absconding, lived in her neighbourhood.
The 30-year-old man lured the girl by offering chocolates and took her to a newly constructed house and allegedly sexually assaulted her there, police were quoted as saying by PTI.
4. Two held for abducting, raping minor in UP
Two persons have been arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl after abducting her in Uttar Pradesh's Chitrakoot district, police said. The accused, Angad and Bhadauti, allegedly raped the girl on Friday night when she had gone to the fields, they said.
The girl returned home on Saturday morning and narrated her ordeal to the family members, following which an FIR was registered and the accused were arrested, police said.?
5. 14-days judicial custody for ASI arrested on rape charge
A suspended assistant sub-inspector of police in Odisha¡¯s Puri district was on Saturday sent to jail after being arrested on the charge of raping a married woman.
The ASI identified as Chittaranjan Dash was produced before the Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Isha Patis court which rejected his bail petition. The judge sent the suspended ASI to 14 days judicial remand, a government advocate was quoted as saying by PTI.?
Earlier, the state government had suspended the ASI after he was arrested on allegation of the 30-year-old woman. The woman on January 2 had lodged a written complaint before the SDPO, Pipili alleging that she was raped by Dash. The woman alleged that the ASI raped her at his residence when she visited the place in connection with a case.?
6. Man absconding after raping minor daughter in Punjab's Ferozepur
A man is on the run after he allegedly raped his minor daughter at home in Punjab's Ferozepur district, police said. The incident happened at the home of accused Seera of Sodhi Nagar village, they said.
In her statement to the police, the 14-year-old victim said her parents quarrelled after which her livid mom left home for a relative's place. Later, the accused is said to have committed the act, police said adding that the girl narrated the ordeal to her mother the following day.
The father was booked under Section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accused is absconding and police have launched a manhunt to nab him.
7. Two minors among six held for teenage girl's rape in Meghalaya
Six persons, including two minor boys, were arrested on the charge of gangraping a teenage girl in Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district, a senior police officer said. According to a complaint filed by the 16-year-old girl's family, she was returning home from a community feast on January 1, when a group of seven offered her company.
As all of them hailed from her village, the girl agreed, following she was allegedly attacked and taken to an isolated place by the group and gangraped, Superintendent of Police Lakador Syiem said.
A cognizable case has been registered under various sections of The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the SP stated.
"Six accused, including the two minor boys, were arrested by a team of officers, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) D Moksha, based on the complaint filed by the girl's family on Thursday, while a manhunt hunt has been launched for the seventh man," Syiem told reporters.
8. Four-year-old girl abducted, raped by a relative
A 4-year-old girl has allegedly been kidnapped and raped by her close relative in a village in Jayashankar Bhoopalpalli district of Telangana, police said. The girl, along with her mother and grandmother, was asleep in their house in Konampet village on when the relative Rasa Komuraiah (36) entered the house, took the child away and allegedly raped her, the police said.
The girl's mother woke up and found that her daughter was missing and started a search, they said. Later, the girl was found in a nearby cotton field and she narrated the incident. The child was taken to a hospital for a medical examination.
A case under POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act has been registered and a search was on for the accused who was absconding.?
9. Man held for raping colleague on the promise of marriage
A 45-year-old employee of an insurance company has been arrested in Mumbai for allegedly raping his colleague after promising to marry her.
The MIDC police on Monday arrested Harikrishnan V H for allegedly raping the 43-year-old complainant on several occasions between November 2017 and September 2019 at the latter's flat in the western suburb of Andheri. The married accused allegedly assured the woman that he was planning to divorce his wife, who was living in Kerala with their six-year-old daughter.
The accused has been arrested under sections 376 (rape), 417 (punishment for cheating) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, senior inspector Anil Koli of MIDC police station said.
We're thriving towards a country free of crimes against women but these cases only make us think otherwise.
