The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Himachal Pradesh has been tasked with an unusual case ¡ª to identify those behind the "anti-government act" of stealing samosas meant for Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Samosas and cakes intended for CM Sukhu on October 21, during his visit to the CID headquarters, were served to his security staff instead, which according to the government is an "anti-government" act and warrants a CID probe.
According to the CID, those responsible acted according to their own agenda, resulting in the goof-up. CM Sukhu also clarified that the probe was not into samosas but was to ascertain "misbehaviour" by officials.
As bizarre as the whole samosa episode may be, this is not the first time those in power have deployed the police for trivial matters.? ?
One of the most famous such incidents happened in 2014 in Uttar Pradesh when the police were sent searching for missing buffaloes owned by SP leader Azam Khan, who was then a minister in the Akhilesh Yadav cabinet.
Seven buffaloes were stolen from Khan's farmhouse, after which the cops, led by the Superintendent of Police, went on a massive search operation. Three police officers were removed for "dereliction of duty" after the buffaloes went missing.
In 2015, when JDU leader Nitish Kumar removed his predecessor Jitan Ram Manjhi and returned as the Chief Minister, Bihar saw an unprecedented war of words. Manjhi and Kumar were involved in a bitter battle over the fruits in the CM's official residence.?
Manjhi, who was still residing in the bungalow even after he was removed from the post, alleged that Kumar had deployed 24 policemen, including 8 sub-inspectors and 16 constables, to "guard" the fruit-laden trees and directed them not to allow people even to pick the fruit that had fallen on the ground.
The national capital, Delhi, also saw an unusual deployment of police in 2017 after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's "iconic" blue Wagon-R car was stolen from outside the Delhi Secretariat.?
Thankfully, after two days, the car was found abandoned in Ghaziabad by the Uttar Pradesh Police.
