Heaps of garbage, a dirty waterlogged road, and a nasty-smelling drain - doesn't sound like much of a wedding location, does it??
Well, this couple decided to 'get married' in exactly such a location in Agra, or celebrate their wedding anniversary, to be specific.?
Their motive? Awareness.?
Uma Devi and Bhagwan Sharma were the bride and groom.?
Uma got decked up at a beauty parlour and arrived at the venue, while her husband came with his baraatis.?
In the presence of 12 Agra localites, the couple exchanged garlands in an area surrounded by sewer water, on what was their 17th wedding anniversary.?
The guests then ate lunch, standing right there on the dirty road - while carrying placards that read 'No sewer, no vote.. no road, no vote."?
The wedded couple made sure to click photographs of their special day, not just for the memories but also to draw the local administration's attention, emphasising 15 years of ongoing problems related to "contaminated water, inadequate roads, and the overall cleanliness of the locality."?
Sharma and Uma had initially planned on celebrating their anniversary in Lakshadweep or the Maldives.?
But they got the idea of awareness later.?
"We wanted to draw the attention of local authorities. All our efforts to get them to act have failed. So, we decided to protest in this way. They should do something, at least now," said Sharma, as quoted by TOI.?
Inadequate waste disposal mechanisms have transferred the road into a dirty drain, the residents say.?
According to reports, the inhabitants of Nagla Kali, Rajrai, Semri, numbering between 10,000 to 12,000, have been dealing with sewage water from drains, subpar roads, and inadequate sanitation.?
Even schoolchildren are facing difficulties in these conditions.?
DM Bhanu Chandra Goswami stated that they have acknowledged the issues raised by the residents. A team has been assigned to assess the on-site situation and will submit a report.?
"Based on the status report, appropriate measures will be taken to address the problems," Goswami said.
