Not Only World's Most Expensive Miyazaki Mango, Tripura Produces A Total Of 40 Varieties
Tripura produces not only the world's most expensive mango, Miyazaki ( sold at a whopping 1500 Rupees per kg), but also other unique varieties like Apple Palmer and Taiwan Red, as well as local varieties like Himsagar, Ampalli, Mallika and Dasheri.?
Although the Miyazaki mango has gained popularity in recent times, but the state of Tripura has much more to offer.
On June 14, the Horticulture Research Complex, Nagicherra Fruit Block, displayed the varietal diversity of Tripura mangoes. At least 40 varieties of the 'king of fruits' were displayed.
The total annual production of mangoes all over the state is 52,717 metric tonnes on 10,357 hectares of land.?
Tripura as Mango haven?
Deputy Director of the Horticulture Research Complex, Dr Rajib Ghosh, said, ¡°There are more than thousand varieties of mangoes and among this, 350 varieties are cultivated across the globe for business purposes. Considering the climate and soil conditions in Tripura, farmers residing in different areas of the state are successfully producing 40 different varieties of mangoes.¡±?
Apart from the local common varieties, extra-ordinary varieties brought from Thailand, Singapore, America and other countries are also successfully cultivated by Tripura farmers.?
Inaugurating the mango display in Tripura, minister Ratan Lal Nath said, ¡°Not only West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, but also in this state now the production of delicious mangoes has started. Farmers have now started commercial mango cultivation in various parts of the state. Already they have started to see the face of profit.¡±?
Exotic mango varieties?
Among Tripura's exotic varieties are the Miyazaki, Apple Palmer and the Taiwan Red.?
Sold at around ?2.70 lahks per kg in the international market, the ruby-red coloured Miyazaki variety of Mango from Japan is a type of "irwin" mango, which is different from the yellow "pelican mango" widely grown in Southeast Asia.?
It contains beta-carotene and folic acid and is considered to be rich in antioxidants.?
The Apple Palmer mango originated in Florida and is a late-season mango variety.?It produces a red-purplish colour fruit.?
It has a mild and aromatic flavour, minimal fibre, and mono embryonic seed. It ripens from July to early September, making it a late-season cultivar.?
The Taiwan Red Mango, originally from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and China, presents an eye-catching red colour.?
The flesh has a pleasant aroma and tastes sweet with a smooth texture.?
Majestic mango orchard in Tripura's Udaipur?
A week earlier, the mango orchard of a farmer named Sirajul Islam in Tripura had caught the attention of many.?
Covering 18 Kanis of land, the mango orchard was made possible through a government grant of Rs 3 lakh. Currently, 15 to 20 dedicated labourers work in the garden daily, and the annual income earned from the cultivation and sale of these mangoes is from Rs 15 to 20 lakh.
