In a rather bizarre incident, a woman who was believed to be dead 'came back to life' as she was about to be cremated.
The 52-year-old woman from Berhampur town in Odisha's southern district of Ganjam was presumed dead in a fire incident at home and on Monday family members took her body to a cremation ground.
But as the funeral pyre was being prepared, to the shock of the relatives, the woman opened her eyes.
According to her relatives, the woman who belonged to a poor family suffered over 50 per cent burn injuries on February 1 in a fire mishap at home.
She was admitted to the Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati Medical College and Hospital in Brahmapur.
However, when the hospital authorities referred her to another medical facility, her husband took her home as he had no money for her treatment. Since then, she has been struggling with her life.
Things took a dark turn on Monday after she reportedly failed to open her eyes, due to which her husband assumed that she had died.
¡°On Monday, she was not opening her eyes and it appeared she was not breathing. We thought she might have died. We then informed others in the locality,¡± said Sibaram Palo, her husband.
Without consulting a doctor or trying to get a death certificate, he took the ¡°body¡± to the nearby cremation ground at Bijipur in a hearse of the Berhampur Municipal Corporation.
But as the family was preparing the pyre, the woman opened her eyes.
¡°The funeral pyre was almost ready when she opened her eyes suddenly. We were initially shocked but when we started calling her, she responded. It is a miracle,¡± said Palo¡¯s neighbour K Chiranjibi.
After this, the family rushed her to the same hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
