A former manager at Google, Henry Kirk, is setting up a new company with six other former Google employees who got laid off recently.
Kirk, who worked for eight years at Google, was one of the 12,000 employees let go by the company.?The former Google manager lost his job in January 2023 as a part of Google's larger restructuring plans.?The report highlights that Kirk enjoyed working at Google and, most importantly, with his colleagues.
Kirk stated that he has given himself and his team six weeks to set up a design and development studio in New York and San Francisco.
Kirk further told the publication, "I was pretty bummed out for about five minutes, but then I said, 'well, I still have a family to take care of, I learned a lot, and I think I'm ready to do my own thing... First off, the goal is to get some projects in so we can start paying our bills."??
As reported by Insider, Kirk reached out to colleagues last month following his layoff. After learning that Google's decision also impacted most of them, he created a "group chat for moral support."
The group then decided to create a startup which aims to help other "startups grow and get funding." Kirk and his former colleagues also plan to offer "design and research tools for other companies' apps and websites." They haven't finalised a name yet.
He took to LinkedIn to share his story. "I have 52 days left. I need your help....I've always been a big believer that hard work and results will get you far in life. While this event may place doubt in that belief, it is my experience that these life challenges present unique opportunities," he said in a LinkedIn post last week.
"Today, I'm taking a leap forward and turning this tragedy into an opportunity. I'm teaming up with 6 outstanding #xooglers to shape and own our futures. We're starting a design & development studio in NYC and SF. Yeah, it's probably the worst time ever to do this. But that's the exciting and challenging part."
"Seven of the finest ex-Googlers are fired-up, eager to research, design, and develop the most scrappy to ambitious software projects (and we'll do it quickly)," Kirk added.

While Kirk is still setting up his new startup with former colleagues, Google layoffs continue globally. Several employees in India and Singapore were laid off as part of the company's restructuring plans, and many impacted workers also took to LinkedIn to announce their abrupt exit.
