On May 5, the Punjab government took a decision to deliver alcohol at home of residents in a bid to ensure that social distancing norms are not violated amid curfew and COVID-19 lockdown.
Now, only two people in a group with an official pass are allowed to make home delivery of liquor.
The government has capped 2 litres of alcohol per household.
The delivery person is restricted to visit the vehicle authorised by the department.
The guidelines say that social distancing norms should be followed at liquor shops and not more than five people are allowed to gather outside the shops.
Proper sanitisation will be done at liquor stores, which are allowed to open only if relaxation is given by the district administration in their area.?
The move could be a model for other states to follow.?
Over the past two days, social distancing norms were flouted across the country after the government eased lockdown. Liquor shops and non-essential stores were made open for the public however the scenes from the spot were no less than shocking.
Hundreds of people flouted lockdown norms and did not adhere to social distancing around stores. The Delhi government levied a "COVID Cess" of 70 per cent on alcohol to quell the crowd and Mumbai ordered to shut liquor stores again.
However, in such cases, hoe delivery of alcohol could be a viable option. Not only social distancing norms will be followed but it will also help generate employment for riders and deliverymen.
