It is a new life for Karnee Bishnoi, quite literally, complete with a new look, thanks to the number of facial reconstruction surgeries he underwent.
The life of the 38-year-old from Bikaner, Rajasthan took an unexpected turn in September 2020.
Bishnoi who works as the Operating Head of an FMCG company was in his vehicle with his friend on September 3, when they saw two bulls crossing the road.
To let them cross, Bishnoi stopped his car and waited there with his side window rolled down.
As he started his car, one of the two bulls that had crossed the road charge at him, and before he could do anything gored his face.
The attack resulted in the horn lacerating his lips, smashing his nose, gouging out the right eyeball. The horn had even herniated upward through the front lobe of his brain.
Though his friend who was unhurt rushed Bishnoi to a local hospital, but there was little they could do other than trying to stop the bleeding.
Later with the help of his employer Deepak Aggarwal, the managing director of Bikaji Group, Bishnoi was airlifted to Delhi.
In the national capital, Bishnoi was admitted to the Max Hospital in Saket where he underwent a series of reconstruction surgeries.
And 11 months after that fateful day, he has a new look.
On finding that his ¡°ventilation tube to be blocked with some material which was found to be his pulverised brain,¡± the neurosurgeons and plastic surgery team were called in. COVID-19 protocol meant that the surgeons had to put on full PPEs for 10 hours while ¡°painstakingly putting together bone, flesh, nose pieces¡±. After another surgery that lasted nine hours, the team ¡°not only managed to save his life but also restored the face to a human form,¡± the hospital said in a release.
Four months later, he underwent second-stage reconstruction surgery. At this time, the right side of his face was ¡°completely paralysed with loss of smiling, inability to lift right side eyebrow and forehead and a saddled depressed nose.¡±
Though his face has been reconstructed to near-normal, in the coming months he will undergo few more surgeries for artificial eye and scar revisions.
