Former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Sukhbir Singh Badal, on Wednesday survived an assassination attempt when he was shot at by a gunman outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
Badal and other SAD leaders were at the Golden Temple to perform the duty of a 'sewadar' or volunteer after the Sikh clergy pronounced the 'tankhah' (religious punishment) for "mistakes" committed by the Shiromani Akali Dal government in Punjab from 2007 to 2017.
Badal, who has a fractured leg, was wearing a blue 'sewadar' uniform and was holding a spear in one hand as he was serving his 'punishment' at the entrance of the Golden Temple when a man tried to open fire at him.
It was a lucky escape for Badal as, an alert guard standing next to the SAD leader acted quickly and confronted the attacker.
The gunman, identified as Narain Singh Chaura, who is allegedly a former militant and faces many cases, was overpowered and arrested by the police.
