Child lifting rumors spreading on social media often can have deadly consequences and in several cases in recent times, on the receiving end could be unsuspecting innocent people who had nothing to do with the said act.
In a similar incident in Kerala, a 14-year-old boy faked his kidnapping, because he was scared of being scolded by parents for performing poorly in the recent school exams.
The Class IX student from Malappuram alleged that while he was on his way to the school on Monday, two men on a car tried to kidnap him.?
Based on the boy's claim some locals alerted the police and during the probe, the boy even 'identified' the car from CCTV visuals. The cops then tracked down the car owner and asked him to appear before them with the vehicle.
While the car's owners Safarulla and Cheeroth Rahmathali were on their way to the police station, still unaware of for what they were being summoned, a mob confronted them Omanoor town.
The mob of nearly 40 people vandalized the car and brutally attacked the two men who were clueless about the crime they have been accused of.
It finally took the police to intervene and rescue the two youths who are now admitted in a local hospital in critical conditions.
Later during detailed interrogation, the boy admitted that he faked the entire kidnapping episode as he was afraid about his parents' reaction to his poor results.
Following this, the cops have arrested three men and booked 46 others for the mob attack on the duo.
They said more arrests will be made in the coming days in connection with the incident.
This once again shows how child lifting rumors can have deadly ramifications. In recent years, there have been several cases where people have been lynched over rumors of child lifting. In most of the cases, it later turned out that the victims had nothing to do with the kidnapping.
The menace has become so rampant that authorities including the police are now forced to educate people to not fall for such rumors.
