A 15-year-old girl has died by suicide in Bengaluru after her mother reprimanded the Class X student for spending too much time on her mobile phone instead of preparing for her upcoming board exam. Avantika Chaurasia, a Class X student at a private school in Whitefield, died on Wednesday after she jumped off the 20th floor of her apartment building.
According to the police, the deceased, whose family hailed from Madhya Pradesh, was a resident of Assetz Marq apartment in the suburban locality of Kadugodi in eastern Bengaluru.
While her father worked as an engineer, Avantika's mother was a homemaker. Police said that the girl took the extreme step after she was scolded by her mother, Namrata, for not focusing on her upcoming board exam scheduled to begin on February 15.
Avantika was reportedly spending more time on her mobile phone, which her mother objected to, resulting in an argument. Following this, the girl locked herself inside her room and jumped off from the 20th floor through the window.
Though she was rushed to a hospital, Avantika, who sustained severe head injuries, was declared dead on arrival.
The police have registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) case.
