Months after Shraddha Walkar's murder shocked the nation, two other gruesome murders came to light from Delhi and Mumbai. All three murders and one thing in common, their partners were their killers.
On February 15, shocking details about the two murders emerged, drawing frightening parallels to the Walkar murder case. As fresh information continues to be reported, let's look at all three murder cases in depth.
Nikki Yadav, 23
The sensational murder of Nikki Yadav, the 23-year-old Haryana resident, on February 10 has ruined her family¡¯s life and the families of accused Sahil Gahlot and the woman he married after allegedly committing the murder.?Sometime between his engagement and wedding, Sahil Gehlot, 24, killed his girlfriend of four years, Nikki Yadav, hid her body, and resumed business as usual, the Delhi police say.
Got engaged, met her, killed her and went to get married
He enjoyed his engagement on February 9,?unknown to her, and danced away with friends.?After his engagement revelries, Sahil allegedly took his cousin's car and drove to Nikki's home around 1 am. Around 5 am, they both left for the Nizamuddin Railway station in south Delhi, apparently to catch a train to Goa.
Nikki Yadav wanted to go to Goa with Sahil, but he said he couldn't get a ticket, the police said. Then they allegedly decided to go to the bus station for a trip to Himachal Pradesh.The police suspect Sahil planned to leave Nikki and was trying to mislead her by promising a trip together.They didn't get a bus ticket either, so they left, the police say.
It was Sahil's wedding day, and his family kept calling. The couple allegedly started fighting in the car and around 9 am on February 10,?he allegedly used a phone cable to strangle Nikki Yadav, who had just learnt about his betrayal,?stuffed her body in a fridge at his ¡®dhaba¡¯ in Delhi¡¯s Mitraon village and went ahead?for his wedding the same day.
Investigation and camera footage
As the police established details of the murder, sources said videos of the wedding showed Sahil Gehlot as any ordinary groom performing rituals, looking far from a man who had just committed a murder.Nikki was last seen in security footage at her rented home in Delhi on February 9.
After killing his live-in partner, the accused took her phone and deleted all the data. He also deleted all the data related to Nikki from his phone. The official said that both the phones have been sent for forensic test, and police is trying to recover the data from both phones.
The murder was discovered four days later, on Tuesday (February 14), after a neighbour reported Nikki Yadav missing and the police tracked down her partner.
Megha Thorvi, 37
The Tulinj police on Tuesday arrested a 27-year-old son of a diamond trader from Malad for allegedly killing his wife and hiding her body in a bed box. Police officials said the murder committed two days ago came to light on Monday evening (Feb 13).
The officer said that the couple has been identified as Hardik Shah (27) - whose father has disowned him after he purportedly spent around ?40 lakh from his father¡¯s bank account - and Megha Torvi (35), a nurse by profession. He and Megha had met through a dating app three years ago, and after living together for some time, they got married in August last year, the police official said.
The couple rented a flat in the Vijay Nagar area of Nallasopara at the start of February, but their quarrels over money began, the police official said.
Fought over money
The incident took place on Sunday when the couple had a fight over money. He?allegedly strangled Megha with a towel and then stuffed the body in a bed.?He allegedly told the investigators that he killed Megha on February 11 following a spat over money.?Shah had sent a message to his wife¡¯s sister about the killing and was thinking of ending his own life, police said.
Shah, who was unemployed, had worked as a call-data-record (CDR) analyst during the lockdown, while Megha was working as a nurse, but she too had quit the job, he said.Shah¡¯s father, a diamond merchant, used to give them Rs 20,000 per month, but after he and Megha fought, he stopped paying them.
He burnt incense sticks to hide the odour as he was trying to sell household items and had invited buyers, police said on Wednesday. He tried to escape with the money. On information that he was fleeing by train, the police tracked down his location and the railway police arrested him in Nagda, Madhya Pradesh.
An official said that he was fleeing to Haridwar and admitted to the crime during questioning.
Shraddha Walkar, 27
On May 18, 2022, Aaftab Poonawala allegedly killed his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar and disposed of her body after cutting it into several pieces.
In a 6,629-page chargesheet, Poonawala described how he allegedly killed the victim and what steps he took to dispose of her body.The Delhi Police claimed in its charge sheet that the accused has disclosed that he was friends with several women, including one in Dubai, and Walkar doubted his fidelity which led to arguments between them.
Invited another woman to his house while Walkar's organs were in the fridge?
Poonawala had attended a two-week ¡°butchering course" while pursuing his diploma in hotel management in Mumbai, according to the chargesheet.Walkar also told one of the witnesses examined by police that she used to take frequent leave from work on the pretext of illness because Poonawala used to beat her, the charge sheet said.?
It said Poonwala, after Walkar¡¯s death, became friends with a woman. ¡°He had shifted Walkar¡¯s dismembered body from a refrigerator (after cleaning it) to the kitchen cabinet when she visited the accused¡¯s residence," the charge sheet said.
¡°Whenever¡(Poonawala¡¯s friend) used to visit my flat I used to clean the refrigerator and used to put the body parts of Walkar in the lower cabinet of the kitchen. After her departure, I used to keep the remaining body parts, that is, the head, torso and both forearms, in the refrigerator," the charge sheet said, quoting Poonawala.
Chopped her into 35 pieces?
¡°During this initial inquiry, he was evasive in his reply and despite the fact that Walkar was with him for the last so many years, he was not able to tell as to where she had gone after June 13 and further, he did not inform either family members of Walkar or any common friend. Hence, a reasonable suspicion arose," the charge sheet said.
After his arrest in the second week of November last year, Aftab allegedly told the police that he had chopped Shraddha¡¯s body into 35 pieces and dumped them in the Mehrauli forest. So far, less than 20 pieces have been recovered.
