Two of the most famous hill stations in South India, Ooty in Tamil Nadu and Munnar in Kerala have turned into winter wonderlands as the temperatures have dropped to near-zero in the past few days.
Udhagamandalam, also known as Ooty, located in the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu saw the minimum temperature on Sunday drop to 0.8 ¡ãC while continuing to report frost.
The minimum temperature in Ooty has remained below 1 degree since.
As the temperatures dropped frost was seen across Ooty on Monday morning including in Botanical Garden, BRICS Open Ground, Boat House, and Thalaigunda.
Ooty is no stranger to sub-zero temperatures and every year the hill station sees snowfall from November to February. However, this winter it started only in late January due to storms accompanied by rain.
The delayed arrival of snow has, however, delighted the tourists in Ooty.
Another famous hill station, Munnar in neighbouring Kerala also recorded its coldest day on Tuesday.
On Monday the early morning temperatures at several tea plantations were recorded in the vicinity of zero degrees.
According to local media reports, if conditions remain the same, Munnar will see its first sub-zero day this year, in the coming days.
Munnar, which is located at an elevation of 1,532 meters from sea level in Kerala's Idukki district sees sub-zero temperatures every year in late December and early January.
This winter, however, the temperatures had remained above normal, with little to no frost in the morning, much to the disappointment of tourists.
In January Munnar had recorded the longest cold spell with sub-zero temperatures lasting for a week.
It should be noted that the reports of sub-zero temperatures in Munnar are based on data collected locally by the United Planters Association of South India (UPASI) and not official figures of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) which does not have a local weather observatory in the hill station.
