Heavy rain lashed parts of Tamil Nadu, especially in and around Chennai due to the low-pressure building over the Bay of Bengal that has concentrated into a depression.
The intermittent, light to moderate rainfall on Wednesday in Tamil Nadu picked up the pace by the evening.
Non-stop and heavy in several regions, rains particularly hit the northern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and nearby Chengelpet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Villupuram.
In its latest bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the weather system was moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 4 kmph. It lay about 130 km east-southeast of Chennai and 150 km east-northeast of Puducherry at 8.30 am. IMD said it was likely to continue moving west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu and adjoining Andhra Pradesh coasts between Karaikal and Sriharikota, close to the north of Puducherry, by Thursday evening.
The Chennai Corporation says stormwater drains are not designed for heavy rains, only for the average annual rains. With extreme weather events becoming more frequent, the city needs to be redesigned to become climate-resilient.???
Incessant rain caused water-logging in several parts of Chennai including the areas of Nungambakkam, Sterling road, KMC Hospital road due to heavy rainfall.
