Meena Ramanathan is a teacher at the Panchayat Union Primary School in Kavarappatti in Tamil Nadu. She has been going the extra mile, in the literal sense, to reach out to students who do not have access to online classes, as per a report in The New Indian Express.?
She travels over 10 km on her scooter to get to the villages in Viralimalai. She teaches in an open space, the students wear masks and seat far apart to maintain social distancing.
The subject Meena teaches are Tamil, English, and Maths for Class 1-5 students. But her teaching has garnered so much interest that students from Class 7 and 8 are also coming.?
¡°Initially I set up a WhatsApp group for my Class 4 students. Eventually, many parents started asking me when the school would reopen. I realised that schools wouldn¡¯t reopen anytime soon this academic year too. Hence, I decided to do something about it,¡± she said.?
¡°It was disappointing to see that these children had forgotten the basics, but it¡¯s not their fault. So I started with the basics, like a bridge course. They have all picked up very well,¡± she added.?
The kids get a fair chance thanks to her and this is a great initiative on her part.
