The Aligarh Municipal Corporation (AMC) in Uttar Pradesh has passed a proposal to change the city's name to Harigarh.
The proposal was introduced by Aligarh Mayor Prashant Singhal in a meeting on Monday and was unanimously accepted by the councillors.
According to Singhal, it has been a long-standing demand, and the proposal will now be sent to the state government.
"A proposal was presented to change the name of Aligarh to Harigarh. All councillors unanimously supported this. Now, this proposal will be sent to the administration. I hope that the administration will take cognizance of this and fulfill our demand to change the name of Aligarh to Harigarh...This demand has been being raised for a long time," he said.
"We have been raising this demand for a long time by all the public representatives of Aligarh, taking forward our old civilization, culture and tradition of our Sanatan Dharma. It is coming and now its proposal is being passed in different boards and being sent to the administration so that it can be approved by the government soon and Aligarh can be known as Harigarh very soon," he added.
According to the district administration's website, Aligarh was known by the earlier name of Kol or Koil before the 18th century. The name Kol covered not only the city but the entire district, though its geographical limits kept changing from time to time.
The origin of the name is obscure. In some ancient texts, Kol has been referred to in the sense of a tribe or caste, the name of a place or mountain and the name of a sage or demon.?
If approved, this will be the fourth major renaming in Uttar Pradesh by the Yogi Adityananth government.
In August 2018, Mughalsarai in the Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh was renamed as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar.
In October 2018,?Allahabad was renamed to Prayagraj and Faizabad district was renamed as Ayodhya district in November.
In 2019, there were reports that the Yogi government was planning to change the name of Agra to Agravan.
According to some historians, Agravan was the real name of the city that went on to become world-famous as the home of the Taj Mahal.
