The death toll in the devastating floods that hit Uttarakhand has risen to 67 as more bodies were recovered by the rescue teams on Friday.
Those confirmed dead include 12 trekkers who had been missing in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district.
The trekkers had left Harshil in adjoining Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi for Chitkul in HP's Kinnaur on October 14, but they reportedly went missing during inclement weather from October 17 to 19 in Lamkhaga pass.
Another team of trekkers was reported missing from Harsil.
Though 12 deaths have been confirmed, their bodies are yet to be recovered due to the prevailing poor weather conditions.
The dead trekkers include a woman from New Delhi and nine people from West Bengal. Identities of two trekkers or where they are from have still not been established.
¡°The bodies of seven trekkers have been recovered. Two have been rescued and two remain missing out of a group of 11 trekkers who had gone missing in Harsil. Five more bodies of trekkers from another group of 11 trekkers which went missing near Lamkhaga Pass have also been retrieved,¡± Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar told ANI.
At least 11 more people are said to be unaccounted for, as the search operations continue.?
The State Disaster Response Force was able to rescue 65 trekkers, including six foreigners, stranded near Bageshwar¡¯s Pindari and Kafni glaciers. Another 23 were also rescued rom from Darma Valley of Pithoragarh.
¡°SDRF teams have rescued 42 tourists, including six foreigners, from Dwali near the Pindari glacier and 23 from the Kafni glacier,¡± Bageshwar DM Vineet Kumar told PTI.
Uttarakhand Police in collaboration with the State Disaster Management Force (SDRF) on Friday started a disaster-relief camp in Rudrapur city of Udham Singh Nagar for the victims affected by floods in the area.
Amid torrential rains, the hilly state has witnessed flooded roads, buildings, landslides and overflowing rivers leaving people stranded in various places.?
