On National Sports Day, the Congress Party marked the event by sharing a nostalgic video on social media platform X, showing Rahul Gandhi, the leader of opposition, taking part in the martial art of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.
This clip, documented during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, underlined an obscure facet of the journey¡ªGandhi¡¯s commitment to practising Jiu-Jitsu with children at the campsites.
Throughout the yatra, which spanned over two months, Gandhi made it a routine to practice Jiu-Jitsu daily with the children. What started as a simple fitness regimen gradually turned into a communal activity that involved not only fellow yatris but also local young martial arts students from various towns. Gandhi¡¯s objective was to introduce the participants to what he referred to as the "Gentle Art," a harmonious blend of Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, and meditation.
In a post on X, Gandhi reflected on these sessions, saying, "During the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, as we journeyed across thousands of kilometers, we had a daily routine of practising Jiu-Jitsu every evening at our campsite. What began as a simple way to stay fit quickly evolved into a community activity, bringing together fellow yatris and young martial arts students from the towns where we stayed."
He further elaborated on the purpose behind these activities, stating, "Our goal was to introduce these young minds to the beauty of the 'Gentle Art,' a harmonious blend of meditation, Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, and non-violent conflict resolution techniques." Gandhi emphasized the importance of teaching young people to transform violence into gentleness, providing them with the tools to build a more compassionate and safer society.
On the same day, Gandhi hinted at future plans by sharing his experience and adding, "P.S.: Bharat Dojo Yatra is coming soon."
The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra began on January 14 in Manipur and concluded in Mumbai, serving as the second phase of Gandhi¡¯s earlier padyatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, which took place between September 2022 and January 2023.

This is not the first time Gandhi has showcased his martial arts skills. In December last year, during a visit to the Virendra Akhara in Haryana¡¯s Jhajjar district, he demonstrated Jiu-Jitsu techniques in a bout with wrestler Bajrang Punia. A video shared by Bajrang on X captured Gandhi employing 'locks' and 'chokes' to pin down the Olympic Games bronze medallist on the mat.
