Boats floating by in the local market, residents flocking to buy produce and a river-like water body underneath their canoes. No, it is not Venice but West Bengal. Residents of Ghatal in West Midnapore were not up for a surprise when once again lanes around their houses got inundated.
Year after year, locals resort to wooden boats or canoes to commute as water from Jhumi river and heavy rain flood lanes of the city of Ghatal. This time too, it was no different.
The water level of the river has risen considerably due to incessant rains in the area, which has led to flood-like situation in the district.?
"This flood-like situation occurs every year with our houses and shops submerged. Since there is deep water, we've to use boats to travel," Manas, a resident said speaking to ANI.
"Due to overflowing river water 50% of Ghatal is under water. We face this flood-like situation sometimes for June, July, August, September & sometimes till October. Those who have shops suffer with no income during this time," said shopkeeper Ranjit.
In Ghatal, a bridge got washed away too due to rise in water level that got triggered by heavy rains.?
According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of more rain for the next one or two days. The water level of many rivers of South Bengal has increased, due to which the possibility of floods has increased in the surrounding areas, as per IMD. Property worth several lakhs has been damaged due to water logging.
