A 25-year-old woman, who was visiting the Golden Temple in Amritsar from Fazilka earlier this week, was allegedly gang-raped by six men, police said on Friday.
Three of the accused men were arrested?on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, a police official said. The incident took place at an abandoned house in Attari village.?
The arrested accused were identified as Yuvraj Singh, Gurpreet Singh and Kuldeep Singh in Amritsar, Punjab. Efforts are being made to arrest the other three accused.?
According to the police, the six accused worked as labourers in grain markets and kilns. On Tuesday, the woman went to Amritsar to visit Golden Temple and Gurdwara Shaheedan Sahib.?
The woman slept in the gurudwara on Tuesday night and the next day at around 10 am, she went to the city bus stand to return to her home in Fazilka. During this time, Yuvraj Singh approached the woman and offered to take her to the Attari-Wagah border. The man managed to convince the woman to accompany him.?
The survivor said in her complaint that she had arrived alone from Fazilka on Tuesday and paid obeisance at a gurdwara. A?stranger, who came into contact with her and won her trust, took her to a house in an isolated area where five more men reached and raped her through the night, the official said.? ?
The accused threatened the woman with dire consequences and warned her against speaking to the police, as per her complaint.?
On Wednesday morning, they took her to the outskirts of the city and fled. She approached the police on Wednesday evening with her complaint.
Station house officer (SHO) of A-division police station Narayan Singh said that the woman was standing barefoot at the bus stand when the Singh took her to the market on the pretext of buying a pair of shoes to her. The man used the excuse to win the woman's trust and then asked her to visit the Attari-Wagah border with him.?
Singh then called Gursewak to the area and the two men took the woman to an abandoned house on a two-wheeler. The other accused also reached the spot. The SHO said that the three accused were arrested after raids were conducted at their houses.
A case has been registered against six men, including the main accused identified as Yugraj Singh. While two of the accused have been arrested, the other four would be nabbed soon, police said.
