In a surprising move, cricket legend MS Dhoni has stepped down as captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the upcoming TATA IPL 2024 season, passing the mantle to opener Ruturaj Gaikwad. The Indian Premier League announced the move on the eve of CSK's clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore.
"MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings' captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season," said CSK.
Speculation is rife regarding Dhoni's future with the franchise, with suggestions that he might retire at the end of the season prompting the need for a smooth transition in leadership.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan commented, "Whatever Dhoni does, it is in the best interest of the team. I got to know of the decision just before the captains' meeting. You have to respect his decision, it is his call."
Gaikwad, known for his elegant batting style, has showcased his potential in previous seasons, notably scoring 590 runs in 16 games last year and 635 runs in 2021. The 27-year-old has also captained the Indian team to a gold medal in the Asian Games and led his state side Maharashtra.
CSK, synonymous with Dhoni's leadership, is expected to retain him in a significant role within the franchise despite relinquishing the captaincy.
Head coach Stephen Fleming explained, "We weren't ready to move away from MS in 2022. Dhoni has a good sense of the game, but we want to develop the young players for the role. We are well prepared this time."
Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in August 2020, has played a staggering 250 IPL matches, amassing over 5000 runs at a strike rate of 135.92. Despite grappling with knee issues last season, he is anticipated to bat higher up the order after undergoing surgery and regaining full fitness.
