The joyous spirit of Christmas took a tragic turn for a family in Arizona as a father, who set out to buy presents and food, returned to find his children trapped in a devastating fire, making what was meant to be a festive celebration a heart-wrenching and fatal accident.
The father of four of the children who tragically lost their lives in an Arizona house fire explained to investigators that he was away Christmas shopping when the devastating incident unfolded on Saturday.
The victims, comprising three brothers aged 2, 5, and 13, their 4-year-old sister, and an 11-year-old relative, found themselves trapped upstairs as the flames rapidly engulfed their Bullhead City home.
"The initial fire investigation has revealed that the fire originated in the downstairs foyer area, most likely making it impossible for the children in the upstairs bedroom to get out of the residence safely,"?the Bullhead City Police Department said in a Facebook post.
"The fire traveled up the only staircase inside the home, preventing the victims from exiting."
Neighbors attempted to save the children, going as far as placing an extension ladder against the upstairs bedroom window.
¡°We pulled the garage door open, and there were guys pulling stuff out,¡± neighbor Patrick O¡¯Neal told the AZ Family.
¡°The closer we got to the door, there was smoke starting to come into the garage and choking people out.¡±
Firefighters reached the scene at 4:54 p.m., managing to extinguish the main body of the fire within 10 minutes, but unfortunately, it was too late.
