Passengers aboard a Delta Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit were left in shock when maggots began raining down on them from an overhead compartment, prompting the plane to turn around mid-flight to Schipol.
The unsettling incident unfolded on Tuesday, with passengers seated in the economy section raising alarm about the unexpected downpour of insects from the bin above them. Investigations later revealed that the source of the infestation was rotting fish stored in a passenger's carry-on luggage, lodged in the overhead compartment.
One passenger recounted the episode on Reddit, reportedly writing: "My family and I were in the row directly in front of the maggots. The lady right behind us told the flight attendants the maggots were falling on her head. Ugh. I turned around and they were wiggling around on the seat."
"One of our carry-on bags was right nearby the disgusting one so at the end of the flight when I went to get it after checking it over thoroughly, the passenger in question was still sitting there and didn't exit the plane. Some kind of consequences but unclear what. Also apparently it was wrapped in newspaper. Absolutely gross," she said.
The Reddit post concluded that five of their suitcase didn't make it to their destination because of the mishap.
Delta Airlines, in response, issued an apology for the disruption caused by what they termed an "improperly packed carry-on bag." The airline assured affected passengers that they were promptly accommodated on the next available flight, while the aircraft underwent extensive cleaning before returning to service.
