Canada has rejected reports by some Canadian media outlets linking Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to criminal activities in the country. Nathalie G. Drouin, the Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council and National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister of Canada, stated that any such suggestions are speculative and inaccurate.
¡°On October 14th, because of a significant and ongoing threat to public safety, the RCMP and officials took the extraordinary step of making public accusations of serious criminal activity in Canada perpetrated by agents of the Government of India.
The Government of Canada has not stated, nor is it aware of evidence, linking Prime Minister Modi, Minister Jaishankar, or NSA Doval to the serious criminal activity within Canada," Drouin said in a statement.
Earlier, Canadian media outlet The Globe and Mail, citing unnamed Canadian officials, had reported that Canadian and American intelligence agencies had found links to Indian Home Minister Amit Shah to the killing of Nijjar in June 2023.
The report further claimed that National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar were part of the discussion. It even implied that PM Modi could have been aware of the matter while claiming that there was no direct evidence for the same.
India on Wednesday responded to the report, calling it ludicrous and a smear campaign.
For more than a year, the Justin Trudeau government has accused 'agents of the Indian government' of carrying out the murder of Nijjar. Canada has further accused the Indian government of working with criminal gangs in the country and targeting Canadian Sikhs.
Last month, The Globe and Mail reported that Drouin and Canadian Deputy Minister David Morrison had shared sensitive information with The Washington Post about alleged Indian interference in the country.
