In Paris, the shape of the new spire on Notre-Dame Cathedral is becoming visible in the skyline, marking progress in rebuilding after a massive fire. The scaffolding is still around the spire, and officials didn't comment, waiting for the last touches.
The authority overseeing the rebuilding of the iconic Notre-Dame told AFP last Friday that the oak structure of the spire, which reaches 96 metres (315 feet) high, would be visible "before Christmas".
This new spire looks exactly like the old one designed by the 19th-century architect Viollet-Le-Duc, which fell during the fire in 2019.?
It is situated at 6 Parvis Notre-Dame - Pl. Jean-Paul II, Paris. The scaffolding will stick around for the installation of its cover and lead ornaments in early 2024.?President Emmanuel Macron said in August that Notre-Dame would reopen on December 8, 2024.
Whether the fire was caused by a short circuit or a construction worker's cigarette is still unclear. The extent of the destruction was not as great as initially feared. "Thank God not all the vaults collapsed," German cathedral expert Barbara Schock-Werner said in a DW interview at the time.
The frames of the cathedral's nave and choir, also destroyed, are set to finish in 2024. After that, they can start building the roof. The last steps involve cleaning the inside, covering about 42,000 square meters, and adding new furniture.
While entry into the cathedral is free, you'll need a ticket to climb to the top of the cathedral's spectacular towers. You can also choose a guided tour.
