The Islamic State Khorasan, also known as IS-K has claimed the responsibility for the suicide bomb blast at a Mosque in Kunduz Province of Afghanistan that is said to have killed over 100 people.
The blast took place at a Shia Mosque n the Khanabad Bandar area in the capital city of Kunduz when a large number of people had gathered for Friday prayers.
Though officially the death toll is said to be around 55, several eyewitnesses put the number of death well above 100.
An eyewitness, Rahmatullah, told AFP that 300 to 400 worshippers were inside when the blast took place.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan also said initial reports indicate that over 100 people were killed and wounded in the blast.
The IS-K is an official affiliate of the Islamic State which is operating in Afghanistan. IS officially acknowledged it in January 2015. It was founded by leaders of the Pakistani Taliban, Afghan Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan after the group led by Mullah Omar lost power and influence across the country following the USC invasion.
Ever since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August this year, the IS-K has also been stepping up attacks in the country.
IS-K was also behind the deadly suicide bombing at the international airport in Kabul on August 26 that killed about 170 civilians and 13 US troops.
It was also behind the blast that took place in a crowded place at Eid Gah Mosque in Kabul on Sunday that killed 12 people and injured 32 others.
Last month, Voice of Hind, the propaganda magazine of the terror outfit IS-K had claimed that the Kabul Airport attacker, identified as Abdur Rahman al-Logri was once arrested in Delhi.
The?IS-K magazine was also highly critical of the Taliban, whom they described as murtad (disloyal to their religion).
International observers and Defecne experts have said that the re-emergence of IS-K in Afghanistan is will be one of the biggest challenges the Taliban will face in the coming days, and expressed fears that the power struggle will lead to more blood shed in the country.
