Man Dragged Off Flight After He Forces Pilots To Divert Plane To An Island, Causing 27-Hour Delay
A Passenger was reportedly 'tasered' and hauled off a Scots flight after allegedly causing a mid-air disturbance.The Jet2 plane was flying from Edinburgh to Tenerife on Monday night when the alleged on-board incident erupted.
Pilots diverted plane to island
The pilots were forced to divert the plane to Porto Santo Island's airport in Madeira, Portugal - more than 300 miles away from their destination.
Footage from Portuguese newspaper Di¨¢rio de Not¨ªcias published a video of two passengers being removed from the plane by cops.In the footage, a woman is seen walking off the plane and standing with ground crew, while a man with his arms held behind his back was marched away by four officers.
It has also been claimed a man was tasered and arrested by police during the incident.
Comes after "drunk" passenger incident
The latest incident on a Jet2 aircraft comes after an "extremely drunk" passenger allegedly tried to open a plane door earlier this month, while another holidaymaker was removed from a flight after allegedly urinating on his brother.
This time around, Portuguese police said that the "disorderly" passenger's behaviour "raised immediate concerns among the crew".
Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) said that a foreign national had been arrested "for the crime of disobeying the legitimate order of the Commander of an aircraft".
Police also said officers had been forced to use "an electric weapon of low lethal potential" to "guarantee the safety of the other passengers and crew" after the man refused to cooperate. "The citizen ended up being detained by the police present there for the crime of disobedience, following the normal procedural steps, and the flight continued to its destination," they added.
Jet2 spokesperson's statement? ?
A Jet2 spokesperson told MailOnline: "We can confirm that flight LS727 from Edinburgh to Tenerife diverted to Porto Santo on Monday 17th July so that police could offload a disruptive passenger. As a result of this diversion, the Tenerife to Edinburgh flight was subsequently delayed, however our teams did everything to look after customers including providing hotel accommodation and refreshments."
