COVID hit people in different ways. It changed the world we live in. Several people lost their jobs and went on the brink of poverty. Some even became homeless.??
One such person is Sofia Moncayo of New York City. She worked in a construction company before losing her job. Right now, she owes five months of rent.
Despite all the adversities she is facing, it did not deter her from being there for people in need. She started fundraisers as well as gathered a lot of volunteers who then distributed food to the families around the city. Twice a week, around 1000 boxes are given out.?
Speaking to the Associated Press, she says, "I think helping others has to do something to your brain chemically because if we had not been doing everything that we're doing, I think this would have been a scarier time. Being able to dig in and help others, it really gives you perspective and helps you believe that you're going to be OK too."?
Moncayo herself comes from a humble background. Along with her family, she used to get in line in such pantries in order to have some food to eat. In her way, she wants to give it back to the institution that helped her live and become who she is.?
Many of the volunteers who joined in are those who lost their jobs during the pandemic. This way, they feel that they are giving back to the community, especially during such tough times. ?????
