A Rs 13,000 crore ($1.58 billion) jackpot ¨C if the prize is confirmed at that level ¨C would exceed the Mega Millions record of Rs 12,600 crore ($1.537 billion) won in South Carolina in 2018, the lottery said.?Along with being the largest windfall in Mega Millions history, it was apparently the third biggest in U.S. lottery history.
The all-time record for largest lottery jackpot was a $2.04 billion Powerball prize won last year in California.
Mega Millions jackpot winners are so rare, thanks to odds of one in 302.6 million.??
The holder or holders of that ticket can take an estimated lump sum payment of $783.3 million before taxes or go with the annuity option. That consists of an immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase in value and eventually equal the entire jackpot minus taxes.
The jackpot had grown since it was last won in New York in mid-April. Since then, 31 drawings were held without anyone matching all six numbers. That changed in the 32nd.
Other tickets sold in Tuesday¡¯s drawing also scored big prizes. Two tickets sold in Florida and North Carolina won $2 million by matching the first five numbers and activating the optional Megaplier available in most states with an extra $1 purchase.
Five tickets won at least $1 million by matching the first five numbers without the Megaplier. Those tickets were sold in California, Pennsylvania, Texas (two winners) and West Virginia.
The California ticket ¨C sold in Hilmar ¨C will be worth $3.38 million, according to California State Lottery. That¡¯s because California¡¯s prizes vary depending on ticket sales and number of winners, and they differ from the fixed prizes shown on Mega Millions¡¯ site.
