Once hailed as the "next Sachin Tendulkar," Prithvi Shaw seems to have done everything to go against this lofty expectation. After being snubbed from the Indian national team, his troubles only worsened as he went unsold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega-auction.?Now, adding insult to injury, Shaw has been left out of Mumbai's squad for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy.?
While this came as a surprise to some, many were not shocked by the batter's omission. Just two months ago, Shaw was dropped from the Ranji Trophy squad, and his exclusion from the Vijay Hazare Trophy, set to begin on December 21, follows the same pattern. Although he was part of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024, he struggled with the bat, averaging below 25.?
Frustrated by his exclusion, Shaw took to social media to share his impressive List A statistics on his Instagram story:"Tell me, God, what more do I have to see¡ If 65 innings, 3399 runs at an average of 55.7 with a strike rate of 126 aren't good enough¡ but I will keep my faith in you, and hopefully, people believe in me still¡ because I will come back for sure. Om Sai Ram."?
Following his Instagram outburst, an official from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) responded, citing fitness and discipline issues as key factors behind Shaw's exclusion, according to PTI.
"In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, we were effectively playing with 10 fielders as we had to hide Prithvi Shaw. The ball would pass near him, and he could barely get to it," an MCA official said on condition of anonymity.?
"Even while batting, we could see he was struggling to reach the ball. His fitness, discipline, and attitude are poor. It's straightforward¡ªthere cannot be different rules for different players," the official added.?
The official further alleged that senior players in the team had also raised concerns about Shaw's attitude. They highlighted instances of him skipping training sessions and returning to the team hotel as late as six in the morning after being out all night.?
The MCA official dismissed the idea that such social media posts would influence the selectors: "You'd be wrong to think such posts on social media would have any impact on the Mumbai selectors or the MCA," he stated.?
Even Shaw's teammate and Mumbai captain, Shreyas Iyer, made a pointed remark about the young batter after Mumbai¡¯s victory over Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final: "He needs to get his work ethic right. And if he does that, the sky's the limit for him. We can't babysit anyone, right? He has played so much cricket. Everyone has given him inputs. At the end of the day, it's his job to figure things out for himself¡ªand he has done it in the past. It's not like he hasn't."?
Several former players have also expressed concerns about Shaw's behavior both on and off the field. His recent failure to attract any bidders at the IPL auction, despite a base price of Rs 75 lakh, has been seen as another low point in his career.?"I'll tell you one thing. No one is Shaw's enemy. He is his own enemy," the MCA official concluded.? ?
