Leander Paes made it clear that he would end his tennis career in 2020. So when he showed up for the Bengaluru Open, the fans were excited as this was maybe the last time he was playing on home soil.
Well there was no sign of nerves as along with partner Matthew Abden, he won in straight sets to enter the 2nd round of the tournament.?
As Paes walked into the stadium for his warm-upthe spectators were on their feet, cheering the 18-time Grand Slam winner and Olympic medallist.?
Needless to say, Paes is in the twilight of his career. He turns 47 this year and is way past his prime and yet showed no sign of tiredness on the court.?
The crowd was entertained every bit as they saw the Paes of old. The man switched from singles to doubles and that proved to be the best decision of his life.?
We do not know when he shall drop the bomb. But when he does, it will be the end of an era.?
We have been fortunate to see him at his peak and he has made India proud on the world stage be it at the Olympics or in Grand Slams.?
