The Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season is set to wrap up with a thrilling finale on Saturday (April 12) as Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) and Bengaluru FC (BFC) go head-to-head at Kolkata's iconic Salt Lake Stadium. Both sides are no strangers to the ISL summit clash.
Bengaluru FC were crowned champions in the 2018-19 season and finished as runners-up in both 2017-18 and 2022-23. Mohun Bagan clinched the title in 2022-23 by defeating BFC but came up short in the 2020-21 and 2023-24 finals against Mumbai City FC.
Mohun Bagan asserted their dominance throughout the league stage, becoming the first team in ISL history to successfully defend the League Winners Shield. However, their journey to the final wasn't without setbacks as they faced a tough test in the semi-finals. The Mariners had to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg against Jamshedpur FC and they mounted a comeback to seal their place in the championship match.
As for Bengaluru FC, they took a more challenging route after finishing third in the league standings. They swept past Mumbai City FC in the playoffs and then battled past FC Goa with a narrow 3-2 aggregate win in the semi-finals. At 40, Sunil Chhetri has been in remarkable form, matching his best-ever ISL season tally with 14 goals. Mohun Bagan's Jamie Maclaren follows close behind, having netted 11 times this campaign.
The two sides have developed a fierce rivalry, meeting 11 times in the competition. The Mariners have clearly held the upper hand, securing eight wins¡ªincluding a dramatic penalty shootout victory in the 2022-23 final. Bengaluru FC, in contrast, have managed just two wins in the fixture.
This season, however, the rivalry has been more balanced. Bengaluru FC cruised to a 3-0 win at home in Kanteerava, while Mohun Bagan edged out a narrow 1-0 victory in the return leg at Salt Lake.?
