For the first time in its history, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has introduced a mid-card championship belt for female wrestlers. WWE officially unveiled the Women's United States Championship on Friday Night SmackDown on November 8.
SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis, who introduced the Women's United States Championship, said the title won't just be awarded or handed over; it will have to be earned.
According to Aldis, the championship will be awarded to "whoever is willing to go above and beyond and seize the moment." He told the female wrestlers on the roster that "opportunity knocks, and it's time to answer and make history."??
WWE has a long history of women's championships, with the first WWE Women's Championship being won by The Fabulous Moolah back in 1956.
Over the years, WWE has also introduced several championship belts for women, including the WWE Divas Championship and Women's World Championship
Apart from these, WWE also has a Women's Tag Team Championship, the NXT Women's Championship, NXT UK Women's Championship, NXT Women's North American Championship, and NXT Women's Tag Team Championship.
The introduction of the first-ever mid-card championship is seen by many as the next phase in the evolution of women's wrestling in WWE. In recent years, women's wrestling has gained more prominence in WWE with separate Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank ladder matches for female performers. In 2019, for the first time in WWE's history, a women's match featuring Raw Women's Champion Ronda Rousey, SmackDown Women's Champion Charlotte Flair, and Becky Lynch was the main event of WrestleMania 35.
