Another day, another dire warning concerning artificial intelligence. This time, a Microsoft economist has warned against bad actors who might use artificial intelligence tools to cause damage.?
Speaking at a World Economic Forum panel in Geneva on Wednesday, Microsoft's Chief Economist Michael Schwarz said that he was "confident AI will be used by bad actors, and yes it will cause real damage."
"It can do a lot damage in the hands of spammers with elections and so on," he noted. At the same time, Schwarz said that AI must "clearly" be regulated but added that lawmakers should wait until the tech becomes capable of causing "real harm," Bloomberg reported.
Following ChatGPT's viral debut, the pressure on regulating AI tools has only increased. While the technology itself could help get rid of mundane tasks for humans, it could also eat into millions of jobs across industries. And now people are asking for regulatory safeguards to protect against misuse of AI technology.

"Once we see real harm, we have to ask ourselves the simple question: ¡®Can we regulate that in a way where the good things that will be prevented by this regulation are less important?¡¯," Schwarz said. "The principles should be, the benefits from the regulation to our society should be greater than the cost to our society," he added.
AI tools are growing in terms of usage at a staggering rate. Recently, scams that use voice cloning AI tools to get money out of people are on the rise. In the backdrop of these developments, Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI CEOs will meet US Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss ways in which the harm from these technologies may be controlled.
