Apple has commenced production of OLED panels that don¡¯t make use of a polariser -- similar to the ones manufactured by Samsung for its Galaxy Z Fold 3 smartphones.?
Reported first by South Korea¡¯s TheElec, the removal of the polariser allows for the display to be thinner and optimal for foldable devices. In case you didn¡¯t know, polarisers help in improving the visibility of the display by allowing lights in certain directions to pass through.?
Polarisers allow the brightness to be dimmed and affect luminance efficiency on the panel. Samsung, to get clearer colours, makes use of a black pixel defined layer on top of the colour filter on the thin-film encapsulation. Apple however has made use of a different polyimide material for the black pixel define layer.
Apple is known to source its OLED panels from Samsung, LG, BOE and other panel makers. Reports have also hinted Apple teaming up with LG to develop foldable OLED panels with ultra-thin glass cover for iPads and MacBooks.
Rumour train has highlighted that there could be a while before we see a new folding offering by Apple. The company was spotted testing a 9-inch foldable display, as revealed in a tweet by renowned Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo.
He said, ¡°I think the priority order of sizes of Apple foldable product development is medium, large and medium. Apple is actively testing foldable OLED about 9¡± (PPI between iPhone and iPad, adoption of TDDI). The test is to verify key technologies and may not be the final product spec.¡±
