Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur filed a record-breaking 107 patents over the last year. With this, IIT Kanpur has broken its previous record of most number of patents filed by any institute in India.
The previous record for most Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) filings stood at 76 and was amassed by IIT Kanpur over the course of 2019.
Out of the 107 IPRs, 62 were patents, 15 were design registrations, 2 were copyrights. In addition, ITT Kanpur filed 24 trademark applications along with 4 US patent applications.
The patents reflect various advancements that took place at IIT Kanpur over the course of 2021 - including fields like MedTech and Nano technology.
According to a press release by the institute, the institute's record patents reflect the collective efforts taken to mitigate Covid-19 through "measures and inventions."
Two of these inventions from IIT Kanpur include a reusable facemask (with PVDF composite nano fibres) and a nasal spray formulation to fight against Covid-19 and related illnesses.

Non-Covid inventions include new methods to treat industrial wastewater along with biodegradable magnesium-based alloys with applications across healthcare.
During the peak of Delta coronavirus peak in India last summer, IIT Kanpur helped ease the oxygen shortage crisis by "developing and commercialising two types of oxygen concentrators" - the tech for which was transferred to six different companies.
Another significant invention is the "Bhu-Pariskshak" - a soil-testing device that can decipher the health of any soil within 90 seconds. With large-scale applications, it could revolutionise agriculture in India.

What's seen as IIT's equivalent in the US - MIT filed 304 utility patents in 2018. That year, it took the second spot for universities with most awarded patents globally. The numbers for the last year are expected to be on the same trajectory. By comparison, American company IBM files the most patents in the US. In 2020 alone, the company filed 9,130 US patents.
