An Apple feature is helping people contact emergency services in North America. The SOS via Satellite feature on iPhone 14 was used by residents of Dog Lake in Ontario, Canada to get assistance from emergency workers.
Amid wildfires in Canada, two residents, Warren Thibodeau and Orel Crack, attempted to extinguish the fire, Benzinga reported. The remote island did not have any cellular signals, cutting them from all communication.
Both the residents, however, had the latest iPhone 14 models that come with the SOS via Satellite feature, SooToday reported. "We were able to get assistance from the MNR by using the new GlobalStar emergency feature of the iPhone 14 while pulling up to the burning island," said Belanger.

The SOS via satellite feature is currently available on iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. It allows users to send SOS messages to emergency services in the absence of cellular and WiFi connectivity.
Earlier, the feature helped in the rescue of a man stranded in remote Alaska. During a snowmobile trip from Noorvik to Kotzebue, the man activated the feature, allowing Alaska State Troopers and local search teams to find him. This happened in December, 2022.

In addition, the SOS feature also made the rescue of two people stranded 300 feet in a remote canyon possible in the Angeles National Forest. Here, too, there was no phone service available.
