Apple took the smartphone industry by storm when it came out with an affordable version of its iPhone in the form of iPhone XR in 2018. The strategy has worked wonders for the Cupertino based tech giant, as iPhone XR is now reported to be the best selling smartphone in the world in 2019.
The report by a research firm named ¡®Omdia¡¯ mentions a sale of 46.3 million units of iPhone XR units in 2019 alone. To put this into perspective, know that this number is 9 million more than the next best-selling smartphone - also an iPhone. It is also more than double of iPhone XR sales in 2018, the year it was launched. Know that the iPhone XR became the best selling phone in Q3, 2019, right after it was launched.
The second best-selling smartphone came out to be iPhone 11, with a total of 37.3 million units sold during the year. Following the first two spots is Samsung with three of its smartphones lined up for the next three spots. Galaxy A10 is mentioned to be the third best-selling smartphone with a sale of 30.3 million units. Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A20 stood at third with 24.2 million and 23.1 million units sold respectively. Samsung managed to bag a total of four spots in this list of top 10 shipped devices in 2019.
Apple came back into the mix at six and seven, with its current flagship - iPhone 11 Pro Max selling 17.6 million units and the iPhone 8 selling 17.4 million units. This, despite a consistent drop in the total shipments by Apple for the last two years.
It is easy to see how Apple and Samsung dominate the top 10 spots in the list. The only other smartphone manufacturer to feature in the list of top 10 was Xiaomi, with its Redmi Note 7 selling 16.4 million units in 2019.
