Ever wondered what it would be like to text your loved ones underwater? Turns out, Apple is trying its hand at building something to enable the same on its iPhones.?
Apple has filed a new patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to support moisture on the screen. The patent reveals that if Apple chooses to pursue this feature, it would let customers use their device in rain and underwater.
Equipped with the envisioned tech, iPhones would adjust to conditions at hand. With the right display, control buttons, and sensors, this may be possible in the near-future.
The sensors would be responsible for making sure that liquid drops do not lead to false touches, a frustrating issue that plagues all cell phones, even those with a good water resistance rating. According to the patent filing, the screen for iPhones would also become pressure-sensitive underwater.

No smartphones are waterproof. Most smartphones, including iPhones, have a water resistance rating after which they can be damaged. The filing also reveals that users will be alerted in case they go too deep in order to prevent device damage.
The filing also refers to assigning shortcuts to custom keys that will pop on the screen once an iPhone recognises heavy moisture activity or is submerged. This way, in case regular touch inputs stop working underwater, users can use dedicated hotkeys to do a series of tasks like taking a photo, making a call, shooting a video, etc.

Don't get your hopes up, though! Even if the feature is picked up by Apple for iPhones, it will not appear for years to come. Patents only reflect the ambition of companies and does not guarantee the inclusion of any feature on a device.
