Reported first by Macrumors, the documentary was shared by The Wall Street Journal which spoke about the evolution of the iPhone as it celebrated its 15th anniversary. In this documentary, one section looked at Android smartphones and how it started getting larger screens, way before the iPhone did.
When asked how much of a factor Samsung and other Android smartphone makers had on Apple at the time, Joswiak stated that they were annoying, "They were annoying. And they were annoying because, as you know, they ripped off our technology. They took the innovations that we had created and created a poor copy of it, and just put a bigger screen around it. So, yeah, we were none too pleased."
When Samsung launched devices like Galaxy Note or even the Galaxy S4 sporting a large 5-inch screen in 2013, Apple had just a 4-inch display on the 4s. Eventually, they did get large screen phones in 2014 with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, sporting 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays respectively.
And since then we¡¯ve seen the love that¡¯s garnered with iPhone¡¯s large-screen variants.
In 2011, Apple had sued Samsung for patent infringement, claiming that Samsung had allegedly copied iPhone¡¯s design with its own Galaxy line of smartphones. At the time, the Cupertino giant was awarded around $1 billion in damages, but post a retrial, this amount was further reduced.
