India¡¯s smartphone exports increased three times to Rs 4,300 crores during the April-June quarter this year, indicating positive signs of recovery and growth in the industry.?

This was revealed by India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) on Tuesday (highlighted by PTI). Same time last year, smartphone exports stood at Rs 1,300 crore, when the novel coronavirus pandemic took over the entire nation and the world.
ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo explained in a statement, "The mobile handset manufacturing industry is continuing its growth juggernaut and its historic journey to meet its objective of becoming the world's number one manufacturing destination in sync with the Prime Minister's (Narendra Modi) vision."
Mohindroo highlighted that even with the second wave of COVID-19 causing catastrophic devastation, the industry has managed to keep the show running with crucial progress in manufacturing and exports supported by the nation¡¯s PLI scheme.?
He claims that electronic goods exports have also shown a rise of 100 percent year on year during the first quarter of the current fiscal year, and has already crossed the Rs 20,000 crore mark.?

He also stated that there is a steep decline in the imports of smartphones, amounting to just Rs 600 crore during the first quarter of 2021-2022. Looking at 2020-2021, this number was at a considerable Rs 3,100 crore. This is at an all-time low since 2014-2015.
For laptops and tablets, ICEA data revealed that the nation saw over 50 percent jump in imports for laptops and tablets, amounting to Rs 10,000 crore during the June 2021 quarter. Same time last year, this was just around Rs 6,000 crores.?

Mohindroo concluded by stating, "Our endeavour is to replicate the success of mobile phone manufacturing in India to 'IT hardware' (desktops, laptops and tablets). We are working with the government to create suitable policy intervention to support and create an ecosystem to build large-scale manufacturing of these products in India, and cater to at least 25 percent of the global requirement."
