As COVID-19 took a tiger grasp on our world last year, infecting millions along the way, we all hoped for a vaccine that would help us take down the novel coronavirus.?
And amidst the chaos, the first name that surfaced was Moderna which promised that through its novel mRNA process could take down novel coronavirus.?
Just last month, Moderna¡¯s COVID-19 vaccine got approval from the FDA for emergency use. And while most of us have been worried about how long the immunity would last, of a particular vaccine, Moderna¡¯s could last ¡° a couple of years¡±.
This is according to a statement made by Moderna CEO, St¨¦phane Bancel in a statement on Thursday at an event sponsored by Oddo BHF. Bancel said, ¡°The antibody decay generated by the vaccine in humans goes down very slowly. We believe there will be protection potentially for a couple of years.¡±
It is also crucial to note that more tests and research are necessary to confirm the actual timeline for the presence of antibodies in the recipient¡¯s body. However, according to Bancel the ¡®nightmare scenario¡¯ of the vaccine only working for a month or two is no longer the case.?
Along with this, Bancel also spoke about the new strain of the novel coronavirus that has surfaced in the UK and South Africa and how Moderna was close to proving that its vaccine remains effective against the new mutation of the SARS CoV-2.
In case you didn't know, Moderna works on the mRNA platform where the new technology creates a harmless ¡°spike protein¡± within the human body that further triggers an immune response. So when the real virus enters the human body, the immune system is prepared to fight it.
This similar tech is also being used in the vaccine by Pfizer and BioNTech, which was the first to receive approval in the UK, followed by the US and other nations.?
