After Sam Altman was fired from OpenAI, Elon Musk said that the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) is so great that the company needs to disclose why it fired CEO Altman.
On Friday, OpenAI announced Altman's firing, saying that the ChatGPT-maker "no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading."
Musk, responding to a post on X from former Yammer CEO David Sacks, said that "given the risk and power of advanced AI, the public should be informed of why the board felt they had to take such a drastic decision."
Elon Musk is a former OpenAI board member but left the company in 2018, claiming that it led to a conflict of interest with Tesla. Later, Musk told CNBC that he had concerns surrounding the company's possible impact on society.

A potential reason for Altman's firing may have been due to growing tension among the company's leadership about AI's dangers for humanity. In order to expand OpenAI's technology, Altman had been seeking funding. Some board members wanted Altman and other top leadership to do more to mitigate potential threats.
OpenAI cofounder Ilya Sutskever played a key role in Altman's dismissal and was more interested in understanding AI's potential harm to society. Sutskever created a "Super Aligment" team within the company to make sure that GPT-4, the technology that runs ChatGPT, would not be harmful to humanity before Altman's exit, the New York Times reported.
It's also likely that Altman could rejoin the company as CEO. Both Altman and former President Greg Brockman were seen at OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters after interim CEO Mira Murati invited them, The Information reported.

For now, it appears that Altman could either rejoin OpenAI as CEO or start a new AI venture after this debacle. On Sunday, Altman shared an image on X with an OpenAI guest badge that said, "first and last time i ever wear one of these."
If Altman returns to OpenAI, the company's biggest backer, Microsoft, could consider taking a role on the board - as a board observer or as a member of the board of directors. However, it appears that is unlikely after a recent report claimed that Sam Altman is not considering a return to OpenAI.
