A Twitter rival is in town! Meta launched its Instagram-linked Twitter rival called Threads on Thursday morning. In the first four hours, more than five million people signed up for the app, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg claimed.
Later, Zuckerberg claimed that ten million users had signed up for Threads in the first seven hours. Now, the social media platform has already seen 50 million user sign ups within a day.

?It's smart of Meta to link Instagram with Threads, for the former has two billion monthly active users.
Most Instagram users will end up registering for Threads in hopes of trying it. The app is also a safe haven for Twitter users looking for a more stable alternative in the face of random changes enforced by Elon Musk.

Threads has been pitched as the "friendly" rival to Twitter by Zuckerberg. Will it be bigger than Twitter? According to Zuckerberg, that will "take some time," adding "there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion+ people on it."
"Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn't nailed it. Hopefully we will."

Threads isn't in clear waters yet. The amount of health, financial, and browsing data linked to users' identities it requests has caused alarm among users and competitors alike. In fact, the app is currently not available in the European Union owing to regulatory concerns.
There are other Twitter alternatives available in the market as well, including Bluesky and Mastodon, but both have struggled to go viral. Threads has an advantage here, considering the app is linked to Instagram, a highly successful social media platform.
