The Rubik's Cube has been an object of equal parts intrigue and astonishment since its creation in 1974.
We all know how difficult and rather annoying to solve a Rubik's Cube. For a newbie, it can take forever to get the combination right, but an AI bot has just solved this in just over a second.?
An AI?has completely smashed the human world record of solving the Rubik¡¯s Cube by matching all the colours of the device in just over a second. The world record time of solving a Rubik's cube by a human is at 3.47 seconds.
This incredible feat has been achieved by a bot named DeepCubeA. Created by researchers at the University of California, what¡¯s interesting is that even though the algorithm was designed specifically to solve a Rubik¡¯s cube, it did it all on its own without any human intervention or assistance, which is also first-of-its-kind.?
The study, which was published in Nature Machine Intelligence, revealed that the algorithm was provided with 10 billion different combinations of the puzzle and the target was to decipher them within 30 moves.
A human is able to solve the puzzle in about 50 moves. The AI system solved it in an average of just 28 moves. This was tested a 1,000 times and it solved them every single time, while finding the shortest path to the solution about 60% of the time.
"My best guess is that the AI's form of reasoning is completely different from a human's," said Prof Baldi, who is a professor of computer science at the University of California, Irvine.
The reason this is such a big feat is because, a Rubik's Cube isn't just a set of combination moves to get each side right. Its dynamism is unparalleled as it drives the brain to think beyond the mathematical combinations.
Prof Baldi adds, "The solution to the Rubik's Cube involves symbolic, mathematical and abstract thinking, so a deep learning machine that can crack such a puzzle is getting closer to becoming a system that can think, reason, plan and make decisions."
