Tesla owners have two options to charge their vehicles, at home through a wall charger that is hardwired into the house¡¯s electrical system or a charging station. Not anymore though, with a third option now in play, a portable wall charger.
The US auto maker has recently announced its portable wall charger with a 14-50 plug for EV charging. Priced at $500 (around Rs 35.6k), the Tesla 14-50 Wall Connector claims a 25 percent faster charge compared to Tesla¡¯s Gen 2 Mobile Connector.
So, how is it different than the existing Tesla wall chargers? It is portable. Not that it would not require an electrical connection or that it would work like a power bank works for smartphones. The portability is offered by the plug-in feature the new Tesla charger comes with. While the previous wall chargers had to be hardwired into a house¡¯s electrical grid, the new charger can easily be plugged into a 14-50 plug and you are good to go. Meaning use it anywhere you can find that plug.

A problem solver?
Honestly, this is not entirely a new offering at all. Portable wall chargers have been in circulation since long now. Also, those having a wall charger have been smart enough to add a plug to the tail end of the charger and instead of getting it integrated to their home¡¯s electrical grid, just plug it in a NEMA 14-50 outlet.

So how is it better?
What the Tesla charger does offer though, is a higher capacity charging, translating to faster charging times for the EVs by providing 40 amps of power for Tesla¡¯s Model 3 Long Range, Model S and Model X, while limiting it to 32 amps for the Model 3 Mid Range and Standard Range vehicles.

The higher power output is one of the key advantages of the new Tesla charger over the other offerings in the market. Also, Tesla has managed to keep the pricing on this fairly reasonable, with other similar chargers usually costing over $600.
The offering would help in a long fought battle of charging EVs enroute. The new charger can be plugged into a NEMA 14-50 outlet, mounted on the wall or a post and thereon used to charge a Tesla. Once done, the charger can be carried with the users on their trips.
