Touch ID On iPhones Faces Extinction As Apple Reportedly Halts Chip Manufacturing
Apple ditched Touch ID (or fingerprint verification on the phone) in favour of facial recognition or Face ID when it introduced the iPhone X in 2017. While Android phones offer both fingerprint and face recognition functionality, Apple has slowly phased out Touch ID on iPhones altogether.
Is Touch ID making a comeback?
Even though many users were hopeful of Touch ID making a comeback on the upcoming iPhone 16 line up, it seems unlikely now owing to a new report that claims Apple has no plans to bring it back, WCCFTech reported.

Currently, Apple uses Touch ID on the iPad Mini 6 and iPad Air models, but not on flagship iPhones. According to an integrated circuit expert on Weibo, Apple will not be bringing back Touch ID on the iPhone as it has stopped manufacturing chips used in the process.
Why Apple will not bring back Touch ID
Currently, Touch ID is only available on the iPhone SE series. And the company is working on ways to embed the TrueDepth (front) camera sensors under the display. When this happens, Face ID authentication will also move under the display, allowing users to make use of the iPhone's full screen.
Apple is reportedly working on the iPhone SE 4 that will also ditch Touch ID and support Face ID. The company could be moving away from Touch ID completely or working on a new way to incorporate it, akin to how Android phones use it under the display.

Apple could make these changes to the iPhone in 2026, according to reports. Even then, such claims and rumours can sometimes fall flat in the face of Apple's plans. The company usually never makes any information public until the yearly launch event. So, take all leaks and rumours with a grain of salt and leave the final call to Apple.
