Whether you like it or hate it, TikTok is a hit. The short-video entertainment platform that is loaded with videos (some cringy, some really cool) that we all secretly love watching has attracted a ton of attention, getting people interested in producing video who would have otherwise never tried to. And everyone wants a piece of this.
We¡¯ve been seeing Facebook trying to create a TikTok clone Lasso as well as Reels on Instagram, which is still in its testing phase. And now a report hints that Google¡¯s YouTube might be unveiling a new rival platform.?
Reported first by the Independent, sources have revealed that YouTube is working on a platform to rival TikTok. Reportedly, the platform will be called ¡®Shorts¡¯ that will be a section under YouTube. Basically, as the name suggests, it¡¯ll include a feed of brief videos posted by users.?
We already know how popular YouTube is as a creator platform -- people head to YouTube for listening to music, looking at tutorials among other things -- so getting a strong user base is no issue. Additionally, YouTube has a wide library of tracks and music that creators can leverage to make more fun content -- something that TikTok severely lacks.
While TikTok recently boasted over a billion users on its platform, YouTube boasts over two billion users every month. This itself can be a very attractive incentive for TikTok influencers to make the switch.?
However, YouTube also has a solid monetisation structure in place that could help TikTok users at home actually make some money from its views. While there is no clear evidence of monetisation structure for such brief videos yet, we won¡¯t be surprised to see ads in-between videos.
We should, however, take this news with a pinch of salt as YouTube could not launch the rival entirely. However, in case it does, do you think YouTube¡¯s TikTok clone will be a hit if and when it comes out? Let us know in the comments below.
