Artificial Intelligence is a huge talking point in the tech industry, not just for all the applications it has but also because of how it can go wrong or be misused.?
In the past, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly warned both the industry and legislators that AI development needs to be regulated because it can go horribly wrong. Facebook¡¯s Mark Zuckerberg, on the other hand, believes the entire thing is seriously blown out of proportion. Now, it looks like Google¡¯s AI chief John Giannandrea is also weighing in, siding with Zuckerberg on the issue.
¡°There¡¯s a huge amount of unwarranted hype around AI right now,¡± Giannandrea said at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco, according to Bloomberg.
The idea of an AI intelligence surpassing humans, one Musk has been repeating, is a common fear, with the thinking being that a superior intelligence would soon spin out of our control. The worst part here is the idea that, not only will they be smarter, but they won¡¯t be bound by any human concepts of morality.
However, AI experts are pretty divided on this theory, with most lab researchers believing the systems they develop are far too infantile to be of any danger. Even Giannandrea compares the AI developed in labs today to the versatile capabilities of a four-year-old. ¡°I¡¯m definitely not worried about the AI apocalypse,¡± he added. ¡°I just object to the hype and the sound bites that some people have been making.¡±
However, while a lot of people believe AI isn¡¯t in any position to take over the world, it does pose some unique problems. Jobs now automated by neural networks are threatening the job economy, glitched or maliciously tweaked AI can wreak havoc when synced with public systems, and much more.?
Depending on whom you ask, AI isn¡¯t going to take over the world just, but that doesn¡¯t necessarily mean it¡¯s development needs no oversight.
