When we talk of things that cannot be explained, we barely refer to materials. But scientists have created an entirely new material that cannot be explained, they say.
The elusive material in question can be made like plastic, but functions like a metal - it's as strong as steel but as light as plastic. Is your head spinning? We feel you!?This material essentially trespasses many rules of science, and scientists hope to use it for future breakthroughs and discoveries.
"In principle, this opens up the design of a whole new class of materials that conduct electricity, are easy to shape, and are very robust in everyday conditions," said John Anderson, senior author of the study and an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Chicago, in a statement.
While scientists have managed to create, bend, and streamline conductive materials to help us make such mind-blowing electronics, these materials always had a single line of similarities - be it in the form of atoms or molecules that are destined to run in straight lines.

Scientists assumed that this was necessary to conduct electricity, but this new material challenges that understanding. In this new material, various elements that make things happen are in no order, but it still manages to conduct electricity well. "From a fundamental picture, that should not be able to be a metal," Professor Anderson added.
What makes it crazier is the fact that this material may be bent and stretched to make various things while still allowing electricity to pass through.

What are its implications, you wonder? Think of the things and toys built with plastic but they're electronics - a myriad of experimental designs could be normalised - especially in the smartphone industry that has become stagnant.
